Semi-Forcing NT

A semi-forcing 1NT response to a major by an unpassed hand shows 5-12 points.

Opener's Rebids:

• pass with a balanced 12-13 point opening
• rebid the major with 6+
• rebid a second suit, possibly a 3-card minor, or even a 2-card Club suit after 1-1N when holding 4-5-2-2.

Responder's Rebids:

• pass opener's rebid
• raise opener's first suit, either with 2 of the suit, or 3 and 5-6 HCPs.
• bid a new suit below opener's major (e.g. 1-1N,2-2) with 6+ of the suit and 6-10 HCPs.
• bid 2NT with 11-12 HCPs, balanced or a 6+ minor
• jump in a new suit after opener has bid a new suit, or bid a new suit at the three level after opener has rebid his major. Shows 11-12 HCPs and a 6+ suit.
• a new suit at the three level (non-jump) after opener has rebid a new suit (e.g.1-1NT,2-3) a 6+ suit and 6-10 HCPs.
• three of opener's major is a balanced three card limit raise.
• 2 after 1-1NT,2 shows 11-12 points and two card support for hearts. It cannot be natural since 1 would have been bid over 1.
• 3 after 1-1NT,3 shows 11-12 points and two card support
• 3NT after 1-1NT,3 shows a singleton or void in opener's suit.
• 2 after 1-1NT,2 shows 11-12 points and good support for opener's minor, giving him a choice of contracts. Likewise after 1-1NT,3.
